Iowa residents who lose their jobs because they refuse COVID-19 vaccinations will get unemployment benefits under a new bill signed by Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Reynolds said the new law allows Iowans “freedoms and their abilities to make healthcare decisions based on what’s best for themselves and their families,” CNN reported. She called it the “first step.”

The Biden Administration imposed tough new vaccine mandates on federal workers, large employers and health care employees in September. The new rules have gotten pushback from a number of Republican governors, including those in Texas, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

Iowa is also part of a 10-state coalition that filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration Friday over its vaccine mandate.
